Il film è
ambientato a Chicago (Illinois). I coniugi Peter e Kate McCallister sono in partenza per una vacanza natalizia a Parigi
(Francia) con la numerosa prole, gli zii e i cugini. Ma la sveglia non suona (a causa di un blackout avvenuto la notte
precedente), e così nella fretta di partire si dimenticano a casa il più piccolo dei loro figli, Kevin. Rimasto
solo, il bambino comunque non si perde d'animo, e infatti se la spassa approfittando dell'assenza degli adulti: salta
sul letto, mangia cibi insani, guarda film violenti. Se la deve però vedere con due maldestri scassinatori, Harry e
Marvin, chiamati "I banditi del rubinetto" (perché sono soliti, dopo aver svaligiato le case, lasciare i rubinetti
aperti per allagarle), che intendono svaligiare casa McCallister. Per contrastare i due ladri, Kevin sparge per la casa
una lunga serie di trappole (maniglie roventi alle porte, lanciafiamme che si azionano all'apertura delle porte, un
chiodo nella scala del seminterrato, macchinine e palline dell'albero di Natale sparse in casa, barattoli di vernice
gettati giù dalle scale, la tarantola di suo fratello). Il film si conclude con il ritorno della famiglia.
